Maureen O'Hara (also known as Maureen FitzSimmons) was born in Ranelagh. She was aware from an early age she wanted to become an actress. She was a student at the Abbey Theatre and the Ena Mary Burke School of Elocution and Drama in Dublin. When she was 10 years young, she started performing in the Rathmines Theatre Company. She also attended regular school. She went to business school as well and was able to master accounting and typing. The school offered her the opportunity to screen test for the production company in London, but found the whole process very unpleasant. However, her audition tape received attention, and she was then signed to a seven-year contract with Mayflower Pictures. When WWII broke out her contract was then sold to RKO and she relocated to the United States. She enjoyed a flourishing career and is well-known for her roles in films like "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "How Green was My Valley”, "The Black Swan" and "Miracle on 34th Street".
